This is where Parks Victoria's alpine planning team will discuss the development of the Greater Alpine National Parks Management Plan from the very beginning of the planning process.
The Greater Alpine National Parks are reserved and managed under the National Parks Act 1975 (Vic.). The Act requires the preservation and protection of the natural condition of the parks, and their natural, cultural and other features. The Act also provides for the use of the parks by the public for enjoyment, recreation, education and appropriate research activities.
This project will consolidate all the existing plans to provide a broad strategic plan for managing and protecting these special Alpine parks.
The parks each have existing management plans containing a wealth of knowledge and a sound base for management. Some of the textual detail contained in these plans is being digitised into maps. The maps will form the basis of the revised plan, incorporating changes to take into account landscape scale management, climate change, fire and indigenous cultural heritage.

Fire in Our Environment
Fire is a natural part of the Victorian and Australian environment and it has had a significant role in determining the mix of biodiversity we currently see in the planning area. Fire has also been used by humans for thousands of years. Victoria has seen a significant increase in fire activity on a landscape scale in the past 7 years, partly as a result of continuing drought cycles linked to climate change, and partly as a result of fuel levels across the environment.
Providing for Visitor Experiences
Victoria's alpine country and eastern highlands provide a wide range of visitor experiences – from remote wilderness to developed visitor sites. A Visitor Experience Discussion Paper has now been added to the Knowledge Gallery to invite discussion on the future directions for providing a range of visitor experiences in the Greater Alpine National Parks.
Victoria's fishing community important to our parks estate
Parks Victoria and VRFish have established a formal partnership to facilitate and promote recreational fishing opportunities for all Victorians who visit and enjoy our parks' estate. Parks Victoria has issued a communiqué which encourages and actively supports Victorians and visitors to “Go Fishing” in Victoria.
