This is where Parks Victoria's alpine planning team will discuss the development of the Greater Alpine National Parks Management Plan from the very beginning of the planning process.
The Greater Alpine National Parks are reserved and managed under the National Parks Act 1975 (Vic.). The Act requires the preservation and protection of the natural condition of the parks, and their natural, cultural and other features. The Act also provides for the use of the parks by the public for enjoyment, recreation, education and appropriate research activities.
This project will consolidate all the existing plans to provide a broad strategic plan for managing and protecting these special Alpine parks.
The parks each have existing management plans containing a wealth of knowledge and a sound base for management. Some of the textual detail contained in these plans is being digitised into maps. The maps will form the basis of the revised plan, incorporating changes to take into account landscape scale management, climate change, fire and indigenous cultural heritage.

Heritage of the High Country

Speakers include founding member of the cultural heritage working group of the Australian Alps Liaison Committee, Dr Jane Lennon, Senior Lecturer in Environmental Studies in Outdoor and Environmental Education at La Trobe University, Dr Ruth Lawrence and Russell Mullett; a descendent of the Gunai/Kurnai of Gippsland, Russell has been surveying, recording, managing and protecting aboriginal cultural heritage for the last 20 years.
Mountains of Memories, Story 4 :Home in the High Country
This is the fourth and final blog about the ACMI digital story telling workshop. "Home in the High Country" is a story by Trevor Larner about his connections to the high country and his long time use of huts. It was common then for people to rely on huts for accomodation. Today huts are primarily managed for historic and social value. Parks Victoria encourages people to be self reliant and not to depend on huts for refuge.
Victorian National Parks Association critique of Alpine Plan process
The Victorian National Parks Association (VNPA) published an article in their March 2009 edition of ParkWatch titled Alps plan going off track? (For information on the VNPA's views, visit their website at www.vnpa.org.au). We welcome the review by the VNPA and seek your comments on the process to deliver the best possible management plan for the community and the park.
A number of topics raised by the VNPA included
• The large planning area
• The use of a Wiki (web 2)
Mountains of Memories, Story 3
This is the third blog about the ACMI digital story telling workshop. "In Search of Golden Footprints" details the story of one-time miner and a resident of Bright, Andrew Swift who has spent many days exploring the high country for hidden and forgotton mining sites and pathways. He uses video footage, stills and his own drawings to bring the past to life.
Mountains of Memories, Story 2: The Honeymoon
This is the second Blog about the ACMI digital story telling workshop in partnership with Parks Victoria. Each of these unique stories tells a short and personal experience in the Victorian Alps and will be released on WePlan over the coming weeks. The Second in this series, "The Honeymoon" is a story told by Laurel (Whitcroft) Allen and her daughter Martine Whitcroft, about their families long and engaging association with the Mt Buffalo Challet.

Tab renamed
Have you noticed we've changed the name of one of the blue tabs? We are working on the wiki functionality to begin writing the management plan. In doing so we have renamed one of the existing tabs from "Plan" to "Process". We will use the word "plan" in a new tab for the wiki soon!
Mountains of Memories, Story 1: The Dulugar
The Australian Centre for Moving Images (ACMI) and Parks Victoria recently supported a digital storytelling workshop for participants to tell personal stories about the Alpine Country. Participant learnt how to use photo's, video footage, voice-over and sound to help tell their stories which were produced during the 3 day workshop. Each of these unique stories tells a short and personal experience in the Victorian Alps and will be released on WePlan over the coming weeks.
